First Week of School for 2014!

Well our first week back was a shortened one!  A blast of cold temperatures and lots of snow and ice caused a few bus cancellation days as well as a day with the school being closed to students and teachers!

Despite the shorter week we managed to pack in some learning and quite a bit of fun!

How deep was that snow?  We really should have measured!

We have now started our Measuring unit in math.  Here we are looking for objects around our classroom that were 1 cm, 5cm and 10 cm.

We discovered that it was easy to find objects that were bigger than 1cm but a lot harder to find things that are smaller than 1cm.

Now for a measuring homework challenge:

Un défi avec la mesure à la maison...

 1.  Trouver un objet à mesurer.
2.  Mesure ton objet en différentes façons: longueur, largeur, hauteur.
3.  Compare ton objet avec les mesures d'un autre.
 4.  Laisse un commentaire sur notre blog pour nous expliquer ce que tu as trouvé!

**N'oublie pas..chaque mesure doit avoir
 un nombre et unité

Amuses-toi!

Pen Pal Day

Last Thursday we welcomed our French Immersion pen pals to our school. It was wonderful finally meeting them and participating in some fun activities outdoors.

Here we are working on a "Bingo des amis", then a "Summer inspired wordsearch" and to finish our morning we enjoyed a picnic together.

Pen pal day...Quelle belle journée! on PhotoPeach

To begin the afternoon we worked collaboratively in teams to build a "pyramid" that our entire group had to fit under.  What a challenge!!  This activity really put our creativity and problem-solving skills to the test.

We also had to remember the 3D concepts we had learned this year such as edges and vertices.  Using only newspaper and masking tape made it difficult to create a stable structure.  All groups really showed perseverance through this challenge.  Way to go!

We finished our day of fun with a soccer match...our two classes on opposing teams!

Merci pour votre visite nos amis!
Bonnes vacances d'été.

Geocaching and literacy!

June is the perfect month to have some outdoor adventures!

Our class participated in a geocaching adventure this week.

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location.

Our cache containers held items that will help us write a creative story...characters, setting, event and a random prop were all hidden inside and waiting to be found.

We had some grade 8 helpers that were our navigators and our photographers.

All students found this activity to be fun, active, creative and challenging...just to name a few adjectives described after the experience.

Here we are...geocaching in our school yard:

La première semaine...our first week of school!

Notre première semaine à l'école est bien allée!  Nous avons commencé un peu de travail et surtout nous avons pratiqué les routines.

Our first week of school was a success!  We were able to begin some work in content areas like math and language, but mostly we were getting to know each other and the classroom routines.

Together we created a WORDLE to show what we thought of our first week together in Grade 4 French Immersion.

We also decorated our classroom walls with these wonderful self-portraits...take a look at this slideshow to see them:

Quelle a été votre activité préférée la première semaine d'école?
