Our year-end trip to Ska-Nah-Doht

We had a wonderful time at Ska-Nah-Doht for our year end trip.

We  took part in Woodland stations to learn about habitats and communities and we also learned the history of Native peoples.

It was interesting to learn about the important role nature played 1000 years ago.  Today we take for granted all the modern medicines and foods we have.  Long ago there were three basic needs that needed to be met to ensure survival.  These were:   Food, Shelter, Clothes

During our visit at this conservation area we learned about some of the plants that were used as medicines as well as the first three types of plants that were brought here from South America to plant and grow for food sources.  These were:
Corn, Squash, Beans.

The most important lessons we learned from this trip were that ...

We can protect nature by using our resources wisely.  We should only take from the environment the things we need and not be wasteful.

The Aboriginal people used plants and animals to help them survive.  For example they used a certain kind of leaf called "plaintain" as a bandaid!    You can rub the leaf between your hands then place it over a mosquito bite and voilà it takes away the itch!

Rabbits were hunted as a source of food and to use their fur as clothing.

Trees were cut down to use the bark as walls for their homes.

Today we need to remember to protect our environment.  We can do this by reusing paper, recycling materials and not cutting down trees just to have more houses.

When we do cut down trees we should plant more!
